Kirk Sykes
Head of School

Kirk Sykes became the Head of School at SEED MD on July 1, 2020. Mr. Sykes brings over 20 years of experience in educational leadership to SEED. Throughout his career, he has worked to balance tradition and innovation to benefit his students and their families. He has a proven record of raising student achievement by establishing professional learning communities, direct coaching of principals, developing meaningful parent and community involvement initiatives, enhancing school climate and culture, and implementing sound school budget priorities. He has numerous honors and awards chief among them being named Principal of the Year by National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Administrator of the Year by the College Bound Foundation and New Leaders Roberts Award for School Innovation. Originally from Baltimore, Mr. Sykes started his education career as a classroom teacher and has held various school leadership roles, including principal, throughout his career. He holds a B.A. from Morgan State University, an M. Ed. in Education from Coppin State University and is completing doctoral studies at Seton Hall University. Mr. Sykes is keen to “come home” and give back to his hometown in a meaningful way. “I’m passionate about Baltimore and the Region as a whole. The State has a great reputation for having excellent schools and I would like for SEED to be one of the shining examples of that excellence. I’m interested in supporting our students in a way that prepares them to be globally competitive, enables them to thrive in college and careers, but also compels them to give back. For me, this is called learn, earn and return.
